Osteoarthritis in 6 year old Golden Labrador
Patient:
Jesse, 6 year old Golden Labrador
History/Reason for coming to Physiotherapy:
Jesse presented to Physiotherapy after the owners noticed a slight limp after taking her to the beach, and when she gets up from the ground after laying down a while.
Jesse was diagnosed with Kidney disease a few years ago where she was given a year to live. She has exceeded expectations of her Veterinarian, which has been wonderful for her and her family. She has recently stated Cartrophen injections to manage her musculoskeletal pain.
Goals:
Jesse’s family want her to be as comfortable as possible. They see she isn’t comfortable in her body, and would like to manage her pain as best as they can.
Management:
After a thorough assessment, it was evident that Jesse was suffering from OA of her hips, and a possible cruciate rupture. After discussing with her Vet, it was decided to do X Rays of Jesse’s hips which showed hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.
Physiotherapy management of Jesse’s condition included gentle massage, gentle mobilisations, laser, advice on daily activities and gentle stretches to address range of motion through her lower back and hips.
Outcome
Jesse has lost 2kg so far and is finding it easier to get off her bed in the mornings. Her family feels she is happier in herself and has reduced pain. It has been great working with Jesse’s family and vet to ensure a wholistic approach to her condition. We see Jesse every 6 weeks for a review and treatment. She is a very loved patient at Physio for All
