Shoulder Bursitis in 25 year old male

Patient:

25 year old male presented to clinic after a day of cricket practice and bowling.

History/Reason for coming to Physiotherapy:

Patient was unable to move his shoulder without pain, he was unable to wash his hair, put his shirt on or drive with his affected arm. He had a history of dislocation through his other shoulder which was surgically managed.

Upon initial assessment, it was noticed that there was a reduction of range of 80% in every direction. Tests were done which showed high likelihood of bursitis and rotator cuff aggravation. The decision was made to send him for an ultrasound.

Management:

Gentle massage, dry needling and mobilisations through his neck and shoulder were done initially, followed by a gentle range of motion exercise program with strict advice to stop bowling and other repetitive, overhead activities.

The patient was seen 3 times the first week, followed by once a week for the following 4 weeks after the ultrasound showed significant bursitis through his right shoulder.

Outcome:

The patient was very strict with his advice given and parameters of activity. He is now pain free in his bursa and is back playing cricket.

Unfortunately this patient is injury prone with all of his sporting activities, but he knows the benefit of early physiotherapy intervention in the recovery of his injuries! He is also an avid horse rider, it is not uncommon for him to book his horse in for a physiotherapy review and himself afterwards. Physio for All loves Luke and his horse, Bonnie!
